Upperbody workout

Wasn't very excited for tonights workout, I felt like hell and had a cold. But it turned out ok, very happy with how it went. My buddy Randy made it down and hit some nice PRs.

Squat and deadlift workout and some reflections of the past year.

Not a bad workout today, probably would have went better had I not decided to slice my finger open right before my heavy set of deadlifts. But thankfully I have almost learned how to use straps and it worked out ok. I also smashed my hand moving bar to use for deadlifts, so the workout wasn't starting out to great. I had other plans.

I learned a lot this year, and had some let downs. But truthfully I think I expected too much out of myself. Who does not though. I was dissapointed to see that I don't think I hardly got a single one of my goals this year. But life was rather chaotic at moments, and then I realize I got some ever bigger accomplishments that are worth more than any weight I lifted.

1. I got a college degree
2. I spent more time with my family
3. I helped my daughter compete 3 times(She got stronger every meet)
4. I got my wife lifting and getting in health in general.
5. I learned a lot about myself
6. I helped a decent amount of people get healthier and stronger this year.
7. I made more friends this year and have a fantastic group of friends to train with.

While I would have liked to deadlifted more then ever, or clean and pressed 300lbs. I think this things right here mean more. I think 2012 is going to be a better year lifting wise, and life in general. I am getting my weight back down, where I am stronger, healthier, and happier. I may never be a National Champion or a World class athlete, but I know for sure I have helped a few get there.

I woke up today and felt great, a little sore but overall rested.

200 x 8 these felt good, just gotta get used to more than 5 reps. I was out of air at 7 and damn near passed out at 8. But I am happy here, 10 is my best ever even when I could press 280 so not far off.

Had my high carb day yesterday, it was blissfull. So I knew I would be ready for a great workout today. Ended up lifting by myself but I really pushed myself to get done quicker.

Lower body day, a small PR but a PR none the less

One thing I gotta say about followin the diet plan I am following is I feel very sluggish during the day, but when it comes time to lift I feel awesome. Today was a good day.

Didn't know what to expect from today workout. I have some dickhole neighbors who live across the street and the fuck heads were partying all damn night long. I was so tired to even go downstairs and get the phone and call the cops. I got about 3 hours of sleep and almost didn't wake up to workout. I think I might have set a record for the amount of caffeine I took in. Towards the end of my workout I almost puked, oh yeah I didn't get to eat much.

Upperbody, back to what got my strong.

So I followed more of a WSB method for the past month or so to help maintain strength while I was losing weight. It worked somewhat, but now that I am only losing about 3-4 pounds a month strength loss shouldn't be an issue and getting stronger should be on the agenda. So it is back to 531, always works and always gives results for me.

So I am definately figuring out some things that I need to change on my deadlift workout. But I think for the most part today was just a shitty workout. Tommorrow is high carb day and I can't wait.

I need to decide soon if I wanna keep this goal of going down more weight. I am actually very happy with how I feel right now. I think what I have been doing is at least helping me keep my strength somewhat, but I need to go back to reps on my deadlifts. It is what has always increased my deadlift.

Sunday training, some ups some downs.

Sundays are one of my most fun days to train, mostly because I get to be around my friends and get some good laughs in. But they have also become one of the most dissapointing days for me. And the only reason is because my overhead press sucks right now, but I shouldn't let that ruin the rest of the workout.

220 x 1 x 5 sets, I was gonna do 8-10 singles but this was taking forever. I need to make another axle. I am gonna change something up here and see what happens. Right now my overhead is going nowhere and until I decide on where my bodyweight is gonna be that is gonna happen. Also I haven't continental cleaned in forever and that was really screwing things up on these also.

Decided to move upperbody to today instead of tommorrow. It wasn't a great workout, my upperback was sore and tired so my pressing had very little drive. Better than nothing and I set some small PRs.

Lower body

First I think I am gonna have to switch to working out 3 days a week or least using the 4th day for just conditioning. It is just too much to try and get that 4th workout while I am working on losing weight, getting a good workout in, and lastly spending time with my daughter. I am gonna go by feel and see what happens. But more than likely I will start doing Tuesday Lower body, Thursday Upperbody, Sunday Overhead/Shoulders and strongman training. Then I will do conditioning work on monday, wednesday, friday. So it would appear that I would be working out 6 days a week, but my conditioning only takes usually 20-30 minutes, sometimes less.

My daughter had a powerlifting meet yesterday and we spent 11 hours there. Between helping spotting, loading, and coaching her I was wiped and actually sore. Woke up today and wasn't feeling that bad, but something didn't agree with my stomach was doing the toilet medley in between trying to workout. Not the most productive way to start the day.

Some thoughts about The Carb Nite Solution

About a month ago I was looking for something new to try as far as diet goes. In the past I have used Very Low Carb methods, and mostly carb cycling. Results wise carb cycling has always treated me well, but there is a lot of preparation and some days it could be a hassle. One benefit about carb cycling is I always got to have carbs, but I was usually eating 6-7 times a day. Not that I mind eating that much, but somedays at work it was hard to do that.

Earlier this year, I had noticed everybody talking about this Keifer who had researched and developed a better way of losing weight and fat, and you got to eat junk food. WHAT eating junk food and I can lose weight and fat, sign me the hell up! Most of my reading led me to Carb Backloading, which in the future I will definately be doing. Once I actually did some better googling, I find out about the Carb Nite Solution. This definately sounded like what I was interested in doing. So I bought the E-book and did some serious reading. While I was reading the book I started thinking of different things I had done in the past but obviously what I was doing wrong and failing. Almost everything I read made complete sense, and some of it didn't. I think I spent the whole night reading the book and jotting down ideas of what I need to do.

I got my wife on board to do this with me and we both have been on this for 4 weeks. Obviously the first couple weeks I lost weight fast, I think the first week I lost 6-7lbs, 2nd week 3-4lbs, and now about 1.5lbs a week. But the biggest thing I have noticed how much fat I am losing. My initial goal was to try and lose about 30lbs, but now I am realizing that I don't care how much weight I lose but if I can keep losing more fat the scale number doesn't matter to me.

One thing that I truly love is the carb nite, I am still figuring this out but I have had some pretty epic carb up nites. Burgers, fries, cookies, doughnuts, ice cream, pizza, and pie you are my friends. I am actually quite amazed at how much I can eat on these nights also, as typically in the past when I am eating less I cannot eat much on carb up days. But as long as I keep eating enought protein and fats this is not a problem.

So to sum it up, I have to say for what I want to accomplish The Carb Nite Solution is working great. One thing I need to really work on is doing enough interval training, once I get this done I know I will seeing many more results, but I have been lazy. Once Keifer puts out his Carb Backloading book I will definately buy so I can figure out how I will approach that when it is time for that. 

Thanksgiving is my next Carb Nite is gonna be EPIC!!!

Not a great workout, but not terrible by any means. I had to do a physical for my insurance today, so I fasted all day. Didn't get done with physical until 4:45pm so I ate a handful of almonds and said "Time to lift". I could tell that this wasn't gonna be the best workout. So I just did what I could.

Family training and conditioning, and thoughts about my weight loss.

So I had started the 1st phase of the carb nite solution, it went pretty well I and enjoyed eating carbs saturday night. But my wife has decided to start it also so I am gonna redo my 1st phase so that we can both have our carb nite together. I lost 5lbs last week so a good start and I think we are on the right track. I have been really hammering my conditioning work, and I think I feel the best I have in a long time.

Very quick workout

Gabby had a Halloween function at school, in the past I have tried my hardest to get out of these but since I have gotten wiser and know things for my family are more important than my lifting I opted to go and let my daughter have fun.

Got home a little after 7, and was just gonna skip my workout. But I figured I could go out and do whatever I felt like doing in 10-15 min.

That was it, done in like 8 min.

Getting my motivation back.

Right now I have no meets on the horizon and I am nursing some injuries. So no better time than right now than to get my ass in gear and get my weight back down to where it should be. Since NAHA Nationals I have dropped 15lbs and I really am not sure as to where I will go down to. Ideally getting back down to 200lbs would be nice, I am pretty sure I can make that happen but I am not gonna push the issue and burn myself out.

I am gonna try a new method, it is called carb back loading. So far I like it, I feel a little tired during the day, but my workouts have been going good. And with getting to have a ultra high carb day once a week it at least makes you feel like you have something to work towards(besides losing weight.) I have also been doing a lot of prowler pushes and jump roping, eventually I will starting adding in some walking for 30-60 minutes at a time.

I really don't know if I will ever get to compete again, if I get to great, if not I can at least work on being healthier and trying to set some strength goals at a lighter bodyweight.

Here goes nothing.

Deadlift and testing my knee out.

So my knee has been feeling a lot better. So I did what any person would do tested it out. I didn't do much but I could tell it was still too soon. I am pretty sure I will be ok, just gotta give it more time.

3 x 3 only used 155. These felt fine but on the 3rd set I felt a decent amount of pain, which is to be expected since I haven't done full range squats in a while.

Upperbody, or lack there of.

I had setup a peaking plan for a powerlifting meet I planned on doing next month. What I didn't take into account was taking 10 days off work and doing many different home improvements projects and how they would wear me down. But I am still on the fence and once I recover maybe things will change. Still once I thought about it, still a decent night.

Strongman day, and it actually was.

Great day today, weather had a little bit of a chill in it but I felt good and decided to push things a little bit and see what my knee can handle.

Push Presses, it was a deload for my strict pressing and I wanted to try my new bar. I was happy with how it went but I definately prefer an axle for my pressing.

New olympic bar and some damn good training.

I ordered a new bar on Monday and it arrived today. Gotta say it is impressive, and so far I love it. Wow having a bar with whip and spin really makes a difference.

Lower body and fun night with Gabby.

First off, I have to say working out with my daughter Gabby is one of most fun things I get to do lately. Sometimes I gotta really push her hard to do things, but then once she does it she really gives it 100%. If I never get to do another competition but get to workout and watch her get better I will be a happy father.

95 x 10 with a few breathes in between. She doesn't believe me but she will easily pull 120-125lbs in November.

I was doing some prowler and she wanted to see if she could do 180 on the Prowler.
180lbs x 60 feet with a few stops, just all out intensity, so awesome to watch.
Then she did a set with 90lbs for 60' with 1 stop.

My workout. So I am being smart and making sure I don't mess my knee up more, I think I might be on the right track.

SSB high box squats
5 x 10 top set I think was 245lbs. I am really gonna use this bar for the next 6 weeks, it hammers my core and almost mimmicks my deadlift form. These were all light sets, but felt good.

Stupidity for the day, oh and deadlifting.

So my knee is still killing me, but I figured what the hell it feels a little better.

Front squats, I decided to use a light knee wrap to see if it helps.

225x holy shit that hurt. Ok lesson learned gonna have to find new ways to squat and let this damn thing heal up.

So I decided to do something really stupid on deads today. It really sucked.
315 x 1-10 55 reps. Now my original plan was to go back down for 100 total reps, but when I went to do my 9 set I did 2 reps and my lower back felt like it was gonna explode. So.....

I won't lie, this sucked and was way harder than I thought it would be. I have done 315 for multiple sets of 10-20 reps and that was way easier than this. Oh well glad I completed it.

A little conditioning

I haven't been able to do any real conditioning for about a week cause of my knee, today I really didn't give a shit I was gonna do something and pay the price no matter what happens.

I figured I might as well do some testing on a few lifts to see how bad they have gotten. I tested my strict press and bench press today.

So I have set a goal of getting a bodyweight strict press by December 26th. This is my 35th birthday and gives me 3 months to get it. I was around 242 this morning, so with any luck I can lose a few pounds and keep my strength.

Training and some thoughts.....

So I woke up on sunday and I felt great, but after walking around for about an hour my knee locked up and I couldn't even bend it. This had me quite worried, but I also know that I am not a spring chicken anymore and sometimes my body needs a little more rest than I want to give it. Anyway I was feeling a little bit better today so I decided to try some deads.

Then I also realize the amount of money it will cost to do this games, a couple years ago I would have thought twice about this but now I never know if I am gonna make 400$ or 200$ a week and that can't hurt the old pocket book big time. Trying to be more responsible is a bitch, but I am father and good husband so sometimes I just gotta grow up.

NAHA Nationals

I competed in the NAHA nationals today. It was a decent day overall, I got some PRs and had a good time with some friends. I decided to go heavyweight to really challenge myself, and challenge myself I did.

1st event Open Stone
I ended up with a best of 31' 8" good enough for 2nd but I have more in me.

2nd event Heavy Hammer
Okay 1st I am still very mad at myself here, as I completely forgot everything I learned on how to do this correctly and it really showed.
I ended up with a best of 60' 9 3/4" 3rd place.

3rd event WOB
I only got 11' missed 12' right at the bar 3 times in a row. Not sure what happened here. 2nd place.

4th event Max Log
My legs were shaky as hell at this point, so I opened light.
1st attempt 220 good
2nd attempt 240 good
3rd passed
2nd place

5th event Farmers Walk 265 each hand 120 feet with a turn
I finished in 38.xx huge PR for me as I have never finished farmers this heavy. Had I got the turn better I think I could have won this event. 2nd place.

6th event 600# tire flip 3 flips carry 270# keg 60'
Finished in 29.xx for a PR and the event win.

Overall it was a good day, we ended up with a 3 way tie for 1st and I took home 3rd on countbacks. So I a sweet trophy, 50$, and some egg whites. Not too shabby for throwing stuff and picking up things.

Log press experiment. I decided to try and press in chucks as my olympic shoes have been throwing me off on the log, and the area we are pressing at at the contest is kind of slanted.

I went about 20 feet, took off 50lbs and made it another 10 feet before my legs gave out. I think one of the skids needs to be fixed as the prowler was really grabbing on the right side. Oh well still sort of a PR.

Past couple of workouts

My past couple of workouts have really sucked, but I am pretty sure I know the problem and I am working on correcting it.

Started out with WOB 56#er
Just couldn't put it together on these today, I made 11' but couldn't get to 12' to save my life. I can't remember the last time I couldn't get 12'

I got up early and was gonna practice throwing, but it wasn't feeling right. The heavy hammer went OK, but the open stone was terrible.

Wasn't sure how today was gonna go. I was very tired at work today, and kind of felt ill. But Chuck was back in town and there was no way I was gonna puss out and miss my workout with him. Plus I had two new guys over Josh and Brandon. Can't look like a bitch in front of the new guys.

Strongman day

I probably over did things today, but my back was able to hold up so I pushed it hard. I am sort of regretting it now but this won't be the last time.

went 10ft,11ft,12ft,13ft all nice and easy just went one right after another. Was gonna try 13'6" for a PR or 14' but I was tired as hell at this point.

Overall I am feeling really good about next month. Just gotta not hurt myself and heal the things up that are messed up.

Was gonna sort of deload today. Kind of decided in advance that I was gonna some fun stuff. But I managed to get stupid and tweak my back.

Highlands and Strongman day

The day started out terrible, but ended great. I got up early to go throw with Mike Sissel, this went absolutely terrible. I couldn't get anything to feel right at all. The only decent thing that went good was the LWFD where I managed to throw 47' and change, but everything else was pathetic. If the hammers were mine I would have snapped the stupid things in half.

Went home to do strongman training, now I am not gonna lie I wasn't expecting much to happen today as I felt beat to shit, and I am not suprised as I pushed the limits this week with the weights. But training ended up ok and I can't complain with the results today.

240 x 2 these were terrible almost all strict pressed, if I can ever figure out leg drive on the log I will be set.

Incline log
240 x 5, should have done more as dickhole Troy decided to one up me.

Farmers Walks
230 each hand x 120 feet with a turn, finally some progress with my grip. The last ten feet though I was holding the farmers but the last inch of my fingers. I really need to get my right hand looked at, aftter NAHA I will.
260 each hand x 60 feet.

Tire Flip/Keg Carry medley
600ish Tire x 3 flips/250 keg carry 60 feet. This went good finished in around 30 sec, I can do this faster when I have a better setup, in the driveway we run out of room with the tire in the way.

Prowler pushes
270lbs x 3 trips of 60 feet. This is actually a PR for me as I have never been able to use this much weight and 2 of the trips were uphill, we were gonna do more sets but I had to get inside.

Overall a good day, I think this week it is time to go lighter and work back up for 4 weeks. Gonna try and up the conditioning this week as I slacked last week and get some good throwing in Wednesday. Also we had some new guys come over today Dan Bunch and Josh Haggin, both of them put in some great work and set some PRs.

Connecting with your children

I have been fortunate enough that my both my daughters have taken an interest in lifting weights. I have to say that it is one of them most enjoyable things to be able to do with them also. My daughter Gabby has taken a very serious attitude towards working out. In the last year she has competed in 2 powerlifting meets and I have been so proud of how serious she takes her training. She has such a competitive spirit and gets very angry when she misses a lift, she reminds me so much of myself.

Early today when we were lifting together she missed a PR bench press attempt, now she does not get to do max hardly ever so she was very excited. She attempt 55lbs and missed it, she got so upset that she started crying. I understood how she felt as I know that when I go after a PR and I miss it I get very upset, except usually it involves me swearing and then probably throwing or punching something(good thing she hasn't learned that yet.) I tried to explain to her that missing a weight is not a big deal it is gonna happen a lot in life, and not just with the weights.

I never thought that I would be able to connect with my daughter in the gym like I have, but I think it is something that we will have together for a lifetime. She has already told me that wants to throw shotput in junior high, I am very excited for this. One thing I have learned is to have some kind of hobby in common with your children, it doesn't have to be sports but to have something your both enjoy makes for a better relationship.

Come November it will be time for Gabby's 3rd meet, I can't wait for it.

Strongman and some throwing

Ok day today, some things went good some things went bad. But I learned from what mistakes I made.

Throwing did some open stone, hammer, and LWFD. I learned that having some gorilla grip left on hand doesn't mix well on the LWFD. This actually was something I forgot about and learned later.

Went home and did strongman training.

230 x 3 x 3 this is some sort of PR as I have never done this much volume with 230, hell I think my best rep set is 5 reps. Starting to get a lot of things figured out on the log.

230 x 5 stopped here wasn't feeling this today.

2 sets of 120 feet with a turn with 235 these were utterly complete shit. 1st set I screwed up the turn and didn't have room to fix it so I had to put it down, 2nd set was going good but I dropped them at about 100 feet. I then realized hey dipshit you never washed the gorilla grip off your hands. Gorilla grip and chalk don't mix well. Lessoned learned..

Event day

Today was a hard workout, it was hot and humid and it really kicked my ass. But still got some decent work in.

I got up early and did some throwing, didn't go so well but still practiced it. I really gotta try and get some work in with someone who knows what they are doing. I have a great person to do it with, just gotta see what it will cost.

13' probably 6-7 misses 4 hit the bar so close. We decided to measure as Bryan got 15' turns out the top is 2 inches higher. So I was missing at 13' 2". I know for NAHA nats I need to get at 13' if not 13'6" to be competitive. Keep on working at it.

Upperbody day

I think today was about as perfect as you could get weather wise for lifting outside. It was humid but not hot.

I have decided it is time to get shit back on track and so I figured I better see how crappy my strict pressing is, turns out not near as crappy as I thought it would have been.

I think todays workout was one of the best ones I have had in a while, not the weights used overall how I felt.

Went and did some Open stone and Hammer before strongman, it went ok I think I am figuring some stuff out. Slowly but I am.

Overall todays workout was a really good one, it started out a little crappy but ended well.

275 x 5 really wanted 6, but it was not to be today. My upperback has been toast lately from tuesdays and I have very little drive off my chest as my upperback is so sore. Still 5 isn't terrible, but it is a lot less than I am capable of.

I did jump roping in between every set, I was gonna do more jump roping throughout the workout, but Mac reminded me of a challenge I had come up with, so I did that instead a little later.

Somewhat strongman day

Today was better than last week and I know more of what I need to work on, but still dissapointing. But gotta take what you can get.

Bryan and I did 5 pushes of 90 feet with on the high handles with very little rest in between. 3-4 weeks ago this would have killed me.

I 95% positive I won't be competing this weekend. I want to but it really isn't something I should do, financially there are a lot more important things to spend that money on I am so weak right now that I think it would just frustrate me more to do as bad as I will. But I got some things figured out, and I am implementing them. One thing I have noticed lately is my conditioning is getting better, still got a lot of work to do though.

Lower body sort of a deload.

Heat and humidity was brutal today, but I still got a decent workout today. Decided to take it easy a little bit.

56 WOB
few throws at 12' got 2 out of 3 the one I missed I had the height just to in front of it.
Then got a PR of 12'6"
Missed 13' 2 times hit the bar on both.

Wide stance squats raw

320 x 3 had to stop felt a twinge in lower ab area, I always seem to have this happen on wide stance squats as I lean too much. These were so nice and easy and since I was really trying to deload not such a bad thing.

Tire flip/keg carry medley
1st 500# tire 5 flips 150 keg 50'
2nd 500 # tire 5 flips 220 keg 50'

DJ and Bryan did a 3rd set, I told them to F off I wasn't ready to die at this point.

Overall it was a great day, I think I am on my way to getting 13' on the WOB.

Good upperbody day

Good workout today, didn't have any lifting partners but wife came out and kept me company. It was nice having her out there just to have someone to chat with.

In between every set I did 30-45 sec of jump roping, I was really sweating half way through the workout. Got everything done in about 45-50 min.

I had a whole different plan when I planned working out today, but honestly I am glad I didn't do it as what I did was a lot more fun and gratifying.

Bryan pulled 625 to beat me, probably could have tied him but then he just would have put more weight on  and I wasn't gonna get into a pissing match about whos stronger. I have deadlifted 600 from the floor and he hasn't yet, so I still have that :) And since I know you will read this Bryan, mine wasn't hitched or with straps HA!

I started out with a barbell, but I just can't do front squats with a barbell. worked up to 185 with it and then switched to the SSB. and then did 205 and 225. Still gotta work on these on how to hold it.

Bent over rows
245 x 1-9 reps 45 reps total, was supposed to be 1-10 but I wanted to die at this point. Bryan that prick went 1-10 and back down to 1 for 100 reps, strong bastard.

Overall though it was a fun and great workout. Bryan and I really pushed each other, although I think he was trying to make me have a heart attack LOL!

Events day, in a SAUNA!

Holy christ it was hot today, the weather said it high 80's with a real feel of a 105 degrees. I think they were right cause all of us wanted to pass out.

This was terrible, I don't know what it is about heat and overhead pressing for me but I suck really bad at overhead but combine the heat with it and I just can't do it hardly. Basically I sucked at this today, everytime I cleaned the weight I almost passed out.

I think my mojo is starting to come back, plus this heat and humidity can suck my balls. At least it don't take very long to warmup.

Box squats,  I wore a pair of briefs Bryan gave me. They are loose but really helped my hips.

Well I knew going into todays workout that I was beat to shit, but I wanted to get  a workout in. Luckily I had the best workout partner in the world, my daughter Gabby. Even though I had a shitty workout, she made it fun.

Did some cleans,they sucked. I think I am gonna stay away from these for a while. My wrist can't take them and the catch kills my knee. I will just start using the KBs for stuff like this.

I don't know what to say about todays workout, was it bad not really, but was it good not really either. I am really getting to a point that my strongman day just depresses the shit out of me.

We used the giant farmers we acquired from DJ, they are 245lbs empty at least and 7 feet long.

Deadlift and upperback

I was actually gonna skip todays workout as I was tired as hell and figured what is it gonna hurt. Well after taking about a 45 min nap, I remembered that my buddy Bryan had to work until 7pm and he needed to workout. So I texted Bryan and asked him if wanted to lift at his house, sure enough he did. Man am I glad he did.

Strongman day

The family and I went and hung out with some friends last night and I ate like shit, but enjoyed it. But today I was paying for it, my stomach is in shambles. As it stands right now I have taken 5 huge dumps and know there is more waiting. Plus anytime I put my belt on I wanted to puke. Oh well gotta have fun every now and then. Still was a decent workout.

Well good part I was able to go to the 330 with no warmups with other stones, should have done the 360 next as the 405 took all my energy, I almost had it lapped. Not sure what my problem on stones is but I will figure out soon enough.

Upperbody workout

Didn't know what to expect from todays workout. I got a 1 hour massage yesterday, granted it was a from massage chair, but that damn thing worked good. I was sore in different areas today and I should have known this to happen, but I didn't. My upperback felt very worn down, still I had a decent workout.
